In the late 1980’s we worked with Three Dog Night about 15 times. I loved being with this group. It was like going to school again every time I saw them.
We would finish our show, and I would run to our dressing room, change and get my seat on the side of the stage.
Their vocals are amazing, but what impressed me was there catalog of top ten records. The band would perform 90 minutes of hit records. I happen to know just about every word to all of their songs, and their road manager Carston Price would let me sit next to him while he mixed the groups on stage monitors. Off the top of my head, some of their hits include “One,” “Black and White,” “Joy to the World,” “Out in the Country,” “Mama Told Me Not to Come,” “Never Been to Spain,” “Shambala,” “Old Fashion Love Song,” “Celebrate,” “Easy to be Hard,” “Liar,” “One Man Band,” “Eli Coming,” ”Pieces of April,” “The Show Must Go On,” and “The Family of Man.” I know they have something like 20 top ten hits in a row.
Price would turn up the vocals on the single monitor that was by his feet so that I could sing along with them.Singer Cory Wells would tell me fishing stories. I never realized that he was quite a sportsman appearing on American Sportsman with Jim McKay a few times.
I ended up being booked with Three Dog Night a few years ago and wondered if they would remember me. We were doing our sound check when they walked in. Cory walked up onto the stage and gave me a hug. Keyboardist Jimmy Greenspoon (one of the funniest people I have ever met) started cracking some jokes and I knew I was in for a great evening.
When I
finished my opening part of the show, I changed my clothes and ran to the
side of the stage to watch. They are still better than ever. |
